Rudy Klarer,the Tennessee Volunteers'#49,is a name that resonates deeply within the history of the University of Tennessee's football program.Born on March 9,1923,in Louisville,Kentucky,Klarer joined the Volunteers in 1941 as a reserve guard.He quickly proved his mettle,working his way into a starting role the following year.Klarer was a key member of the Volunteers'1943 Sugar Bowl championship team,which defeated Tulsa 14-7 in New Orleans.This victory would be Klarer's final game for Tennessee,as he enlisted in the U.S.Army shortly after,becoming a 2nd Lieutenant and platoon leader during World War II. Tragically,Klarer's life was cut short when he was killed in action in Germany on February 6,1945.His sacrifice,along with that of fellow Volunteers Bill Nowling,Willis Tucker,and Clyde Fuson,who also lost their lives during the war,is a poignant reminder of the ultimate price paid by these young men.In recognition of their bravery and sacrifice,the University of Tennessee retired Klarer's#49 jersey in 2006,along with the jerseys of Nowling,Tucker,and Fuson.
